Step One: Open/Save Template file

  1. Open a new “Open Office” text document.

  2. Go to menu bar and do the following:

    - File / Open /
    - Find “Lab on 'wsp-ol-dc' (W:)”
    - Locate and open the file: CardTemplate.ott
    - If it asks you, open it as a 'Read Only' file

    ADVANCED WORK...
    Save this 'template' to your personal template files
    so you can use it in the future

    - File / Templates / Save /
    - Title the 'New Template': ValentineCard, and under
    “Template /Catagory”, choose “My Templates”
    - Click 'OK”
    - Now close just the document, not OpenOffice.
    - File / Close (fyi: File / Exit would close Open Office).

    Now you should have your template file saved to use
    whenever you want! Go to:

    - File / New / Templates and Documents
    - If you saved it correctly, your ValentineCard template
    should be listed at the bottom (under My Templates).
    - Select and open it.

  3. Save this file to your PERSONAL folder:

    - File / Save As /
    - Find “Lab on 'wsp-ol-dc' (W:)”
    - Locate your folder and save as : MyValentineCard.odt

    - Save


Step Two: Create your new Card!

TEXT BOXES

Double clicking on one of the text boxes will give you an editable text box to type in whatever text you want. You can also format your text. The box will expand as you type, but be sure to stay within the light grey margins for each section.

IMAGE FOR CARD FRONT

You can search for an image to use online, copy and paste it in the proper section of the card.

OR . . you can try a fun application called
Word Mosaic

Using Word Mosaic: Go to: http://www.imagechef.com/ic/word_mosaic/

- Choose a small set of words, font color, and a symbol, but leave your background white if you want to print out your card.
- Click 'Preview' when you make a change.
- Click the circle arrows in the bottom left corner to readjust the way the words are displayed.
- When you like your image, click “Export”.
- Right click on the image to 'copy' it, and then 'paste' it onto your card.
- You can move it around your card and size it to fit into the light gray margins.

PRINTING YOUR CARD

If you want to print out your card, send it to the proper printer: Select “HP4000TN OLH”. It will only be black & white of course.

If you want to have a nice color copy, sign the sheet on my desk with your name/grade and I will print out a nice color copy of your card and deliver it to school tomorrow!
